The Adaire School is located
in the Fishtown section of the city approximately three miles north of
Center City. Fishtown
is an economically diverse community. Our school consists of 82.2% low-income
families. The neighborhood is a blend of professional, entrepreneurial
and working class people. It is a closely-knit community of families who
have resided in this area for many generations. Many of our parents and
grandparents were former students at Adaire School. It has developed into
a multicultural community with an increasing Albanian population along
with African American, Asian, and Latino families. Our school’s population
of 526 student is comprised of 253 boys and 273 girls—84% white,
5% African American, 8% Latino, 2% Asian, .5% Native American and .5% other. Our organization is divided into three Small Learning Communities (SLCs), all with the focus on preparing our students’ futures: “Footprints to Careers” for our K-2 students; “Explorations to Careers” for our students in grades 3 through 5; and “Pathways to Careers” for our students in grades 6 through 8. Each SLC has a coordinator who facilitates meetings in which articulation of curriculum, discipline, standards and the Comprehensive Student Assistant Program (CSAP) takes place. English as a Second Language (ESOL) beginner and intermediate students receive “pull out” ESOL instruction whereas advanced students are instructed on an as-needed basis (pull out or in-class). Read to Succeed, 100 Book Challenge, service-learning projects, monthly Family Reading Nights, Shared Reading Workshops, Math Make and Take Workshops, School Council meetings, Classroom Involvement, class trips, parent volunteers, various reading workshops, testing information, social events pertaining to holidays and multicultural activities are some of the special programs and components at Adaire. |
