Science and Math in Literature Everywhere (SMILE)
The SMILE Community is composed of approximately 180 students ranging from grade one through grade four. SMILE currently consists of one first grade class, two second grade classes, two third grade classes, and one fourth grade class located on the third floor of the A.D. Harrington Elementary School. This community emphasizes individual differences and needs in recognition of the fact that children grow and learn in unique ways. Differences are viewed as strengths which serve to enhance our learning environment. Both students and adults are viewed as active learners who work cooperatively in groups to solve problems and to make connections. Students participate in a wide variety of experiences that revolve around a particular theme which is integrated across the curriculum with special emphasis placed on language arts, math and science. Themes are topics that interest children at various age levels and incorporate performance driven assessment. Students in the community are empowered because there exist many opportunities for choice, control and self-discovery throughout the school year. This community fosters a multi-year connection of instructional approaches using developmentally appropriate curricula for all students.
