String Instrument Instruction
- Overview and philosophy: The string program at Jenks is designed to
promote musical education through the medium of stringed instruments. Students in
grades K-8 are involved in the program, most beginning in the 3rd or 4th grade.
Violin, viola, vell and bass are taught.
- Staff involved and contact information: For more information contact Mr Wesner.
- Student eligibility and selection criteria:Students in 3rd-6th grade are given a music aptitude test and
and an instrument (violin, viola, cello or bass) is suggested. Parental permission
is required, and a follow-up evaluation determines if a good fit has
been achieved. Note that although the program is open to all students, equipment is limited (as described below).
- Meeting times and places: Music lessons begin in September and are given once
a week for a 45 minute period during regular school hours. In addition, large ensemble rehearsals
may be scheduled.
The student is responsible for any school work missed during
that time.
- Cost: Instruction is free, although there is a minimal cost for supplies and materials.
- Special events: Our students perform for our winter and spring concerts. Performances may be scheduled throughout the community.
- Special committments or equipment: Jenks has a limited number
of school-owned instruments that are allocated to our studens
based on a musical aptitude assessment. Students can buy or rent instruments from the local
music stores. Practicing five times a week
under parental supervision is necessary in order to participate
in this program. All instrumental programs at Jenks are curricular, therefore they are graded.
The student will receive an earned grade on their report card.
