Suzuki Music Instruction

  • Overview and philosophy: Using a modified Suzuki approach, the technique of violin playing and its repertoire is introduced in small steps appropriate to each child's learning pace. The child initially learns to play by ear rather than reading music, which allows for a strong emphasis on establishing correct violin playing posture as well as the development of musical listening and memory skills. Parents are a crucial component of the learning process as they are required to practice daily with their child to ensure that good habits are formed. Thus parental attendance at the class is welcome and highly encouraged; keeping abreast of the child's assignments is a requirement.

  • Staff involved and contact information: Mr. Wesner (nwesner@phila.k12.pa.us)

  • Student eligibility and selection criteria: Open to selected Kindergarten students based on musical readiness as determined by the instructors. A suggestion may be made for a student to return in the following year at the instructors' discretion.

  • Meeting times and places: Jenks auditorium, half hour classes. Specific times subject to change, but chosen to avoid conflict with existing class schedule.

  • Cost: $2 for shoulder rest materials to Mr. Wesner. Approximately $15 for the Suzuki book and CD, which can be purchased at music stores. A limited number of instruments are available for loan by the school. However, if the school does not have the appropriate size instrument for the child, parents must then rent an instrument from a music store which can range from $15-$25 a month. The instructors can provide the names of local and mail-order music stores to help them in this process.

  • Special events: Winter and spring performances. For specific dates, contact Mr. Wesner.

  • Special committments or equipment: Parents are responsible for renting the appropriate sized violin from a local music store and maintaining the instrument in good working order. Parents will also need to keep abreast of the practice assignments and help their child practice 10-15 minutes a day. Again, parental involvement is key for the child's progress.
