English, Literacy and the Library
Balanced Literacy is the philosophy that guides the reading program.
Students are engaged in reading, writing, listening, and speaking through guided, shared, and
independent activities. Phonics is taught in the contextg of literature and student
writing. Teachers use drill and practice as needed. The literacy curriculum includes
writers' workshops and literature circles. Students in grades K-3 are focused on learning
how to read. Those in grades 4-8 are focused on reading strategies to promote higher
order thinking and comprehension. The School District of Philadelphia makes use of
the Harcourt Trophies reading series from Shared Reading.
Jenks' library is facilitated by a retired librarian and a volunteer retired librarian. This year, all
students in grades K-5 will have a bi-weekly scheduled library period. All students must follow classroom rules of
common courtesy and respect while at the library. Students must come to the library with an assigned class or
bring a teacher's pass with a written purpose stated on the pass. Students are responsible for all library
materials borrowed and must pay for lost or damaged items. Students who have lost or damaged library books will
not receive their report card until the book has been repaired or paid for. Please see the librarian for price
and method of payment.
The library has four computers available for student use. Use of these computers must be educational and all
students will be held responsible for the access rights and privileges, as stated on the School District of Philadelphia
Computing and Internet Acceptable Use Policy.
