Self-Injectable Medications

Information on Self-Injectables for PFT represented employees.

Most prescriptions are covered through your prescription coverage through your Philadelphia Federation of Teachers (PFT) health and welfare union. However, if your prescription is a self-injectable or other select specialty medication other than insulin, it will be covered through your medical insurance through Independence Blue Cross.  You cannot receive these type of medications at the pharmacy. You must go through the Direct Ship Program. For EPI-Pens, you have the option to pay for the medication at the retail pharmacy and then be reimbursed by completing and submitting the EPI-Pen reimbursement form.

Direct Ship Program

Employees can give their provider the appropriate Direct Ship form available on the Forms page or the sidebar of this page or have the provider contact the Direct Ship Program at (267) 402-1711 or (888)678-7012. The provider faxes the completed form to (215) 761-9165.

The Direct Ship Program reviews and approves or denies request – the doctor is faxed back the decision.  The Benefits Department cannot approve or deny Direct Ship requests. Employees may contact the Direct Ship Program at 1-800-275-2583 if further assistance is needed.
