Chester Arthur School gets outdoor STEM classroom
by Ariel Censor, The Notebook

After years of planning and fundraising, the Chester Arthur School has opened Philadelphia’s first STEM outdoor learning environment, called the Arthur Schoolyard. The schoolyard project involved the conversion of an asphalt playground into the largest public green space in the South Philadelphia neighborhood, serving as an outdoor classroom for Arthur students and a space where students and community members can engage in structured and unstructured play.

Pulling up to Vaux Big Picture High School, windows and doors are boarded up, grass is knee high in length and inside the North Philadelphia school, construction workers haul and place materials. Getting the building renovated by the first day of school will be cutting it close, admitted David Bromley with a smile. He is the executive director of Big Picture Philadelphia. Located at 2300 Master St., Vaux was originally built to educate thousands of students.
