Swenson Senior Desire Acevedo Wins 2021 Dress Down Day T-Shirt Design Contest

After a district-wide call for entries, Desire Acevedo, Senior from Swenson Arts & Technology High School is the 2021 t-shirt contest awardee! Desire’s awesome design appears on the back of the Dress Down Day t-shirt. Congrats Desire!
Desire was born and raised in Philadelphia. As a senior at Swenson Arts & Technology, she is enrolled in the Digital Media Production program. She plans to attend Moore College of Art & Design right here in Philly in the fall of 2021, where she will pursue a career in graphic design. Desire especially enjoys video editing.

Mastbaum Area Vocational Technical School student Jennifer Jimenez creates winning design for masks for the Lab Medical company of Mongomeryville, PA!
Following a donation of masks to the school, Lab Medical offered Mastbaum students the chance to create a new mask for its Face Jawn subsidiary. Jennifer Jimenez, a junior in Adam Blyweiss’ graphic design program, made the winning look selected in February. Not only did Jennifer make a dynamic design originally intended to promote St. Joseph’s University, when production problems prevented the masks from being made her work was flexible enough to be modified for a respectable second choice: the Philadelphia Eagles.

Death by Chocolate: Valentine’s Day Buffet
Every year on Valentine’s Day, Dobbin Technical High School juniors prepare and serve all types of delicious chocolate baked goods and desserts from cakes, homemade chocolate ice cream sandwiches, a chocolate fountain and chocolate covered strawberries to a savory Mexican Chicken Chocolate Soup. And of course hot chocolate with marshmallows!

Swenson Arts & Technology HS Students accepted into vocational program
Swenson Arts & Technology High School students from the Electrical and Carpentry programs have 7 students accepted to the ECA Pathways HVAC vocational program that focuses on high energy efficient equipment, prepares students to be a green HVAC maintenance repairer and for entry level positions to maintain and repair HVAC systems in commercial buildings. This program is a partnership with Johnson Control Institute and the Energy Coordinating Agency.
A video created by Mr. Newby’s CTE Video Visionaries and assisted by Steven Herring. Video students speak to high school students working for eight weeks in the shop along with interviews with Central City personnel.

Learn about construction students’ visit to Live Casino site while it was in development
We in the CTE Department at times reach out to our partners to help further engage our students. One such partner, Gilbane Building Company, provided our teachers a tour of one of their projects under construction. ”LIVE” new casino located in South Philadelphia. The CTE teacher used this tour to develop lessons for the students on construction management and BIM Building Information Modeling.

The CORE RISE 2021 Scholarship Program
CORE RISE (Rewarding Increased Savings for Education) is a need-based scholarship program, which offers students and parents up to $4,000 in scholarship money in exchange for saving $500 of income.
Participants also receive invaluable financial literacy training throughout the duration of their savings commitment through financial literacy classes.

Urban Technology Program (UTP) Digital Service Fellow
In partnership with the School District of Philadelphia & Communities in School of Philadelphia, the Urban Technology Project (UTP) has offered two I.T. Apprenticeships for opportunity youth since 2002. The I.T. Pre-Apprenticeship is an AmeriCorps program which provides high school graduates with service-learning experience as they work alongside the Computer Science Teacher to increase digital literacy within Philadelphia public schools. Pre-Apprentice serve as Digital Service Fellows during the school year and receive benefits such as a stipend, scholarship, industry certifications and mentorship. Penn Law Program Opportunities for SDP Students – Sophomores & Juniors
This summer, the Penn Law Pre-College Academy will offer a limited number of full scholarships for Philadelphia high school students. The Penn Law Pre-College Academy is a three week program exploring U.S. Law, the legal profession, and topics such as business law, legal advocacy, human rights, and sports/entertainment law. Scholarship students receive full admission to the program, covering all lectures and materials, as well as housing on campus and most meals during the three week period. CTE Success Story: Hooked on Fixing Cars
In this notebook article by Michaela Ward, we follow a transportation alumnus, Kadeem Carter, from when he realized he wanted to work with cars since 7th grade all the way to his post-secondary education at Pennsylvania College of Technology studying collision repair.
Kadeem has since then worked at a few other independent autobody companies, and now manages Collins Automotive, Inc, in Germantown.
Kamilah Gordon, a senior at Randolph Technical HS, named Student of the Month.
Going through homelessness and depression while trying to maintain her grades, Gordon reached a turning point in which giving up was never an option. We hope her story inspires you to overcome struggle and reach out for support.
