Cultural Celebrations

As we take district-wide action toward becoming an antiracist organization steeped in equity, holding an appreciation for diversity, and making a commitment to be more inclusive, we are developing “Cultural Awareness/Celebration planning teams.” These teams will serve as ad hoc committees to the larger Coalition with the responsibility of planning our District-wide recognition/celebration of pivotal cultural groups, religious holidays, and social awareness efforts/movements.

This discussion featured the state of wellness in our community, including a cooking demo on how to recreate one of our favorite cultural dishes with a healthy twist!

Black Literacy Matters: Democracy and Civic Engagement in Education

A core function of public education is to create an informed and engaged citizenry who will positively contribute to society. In order to do this, we must ensure that citizens are literate and actively engaged in our democracy. But what becomes of democracy and civic engagement when everything from historical anti-literacy laws to tracking programs work to erode democracy’s true function? A recent NYTimes times piece claimed “America Wasn’t a Democracy Until Black-Americans Made it so”. This discussion featured how literacy has been used as a means of social control and oppression, as well as Black Americans’ continuous actions to hold American true to its stated promise.

Asian American Pacific Islander Month 2021

In honor of Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month, the School District of Philadelphia Equity Coalition hosted two community conversations on the AAPI experience. The first of these conversations covered the Asian Diaspora, including, but not limited to dispelling stereotypes and sharing your family migration story. The second event centered around food, dispelling myths, sharing stories of the importance of food in culture, and will feature a cooking demonstration

The Asian American Diaspora

We wanted to bring awareness to issues involving the Asian Pacific American community, but also wanted to celebrate the diversity of our community, showcase student performers, teach some history about Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, and ask members of the School District community to share their stories with you so that everyone can learn more about the Asian Pacific Americans right here in our School District community.
