Welcome to Martin Luther King High School

ATTENDANCE & TRUANCY UPDATE:

Greetings King Families,

It brings us great joy to see our young Kings and Queens each and every day. Research also shows that daily school attendance is critical for every student’s academic success and social-emotional well-being. Students with good attendance are more likely to:

read on or above grade level
perform well in math
build healthy, lasting relationships at school
and successfully graduate high school on time

As a commitment to this goal of producing successful, self-actualized, lifelong learners, we are reaching out to reiterate our attendance expectations for our scholars. As per Pennsylvania law 24 P.S. §§ 13-1326 – 13-1354: Compulsory School Attendance, Unlawful Absences, and School Attendance, all students between the ages of six (6) and eighteen (18) must attend school every day. Once a student is enrolled in school, this includes students in kindergarten, they are subject to this law until the student reaches age 18 or graduates. In addition, our school day begins at 7:30 AM and finishes at 2:34 PM. This means students need to be in the building by 7:30 AM and should not be leaving until 2:34 PM unless they have a reduced roster (this is mainly reserved for Seniors who are on Work Release; all other students are REQUIRED to remain in the building until 2:34 PM).

Also, attendance includes more than just entering the building; attending and remaining in class for the entire class period is a big part of the process as well. Frequent and unnecessary trips outside the classroom can be a huge disruption to instruction and can result in disciplinary action and educational impact. We ALWAYS want to see our young Kings and Queens win and these guidelines help that purpose. We encourage you to review our district’s policies and protocols around attendance with your student (link provided below). If you have any questions regarding this letter or the Attendance and Truancy process, please contact us at (215) 400-3500, or via email to our administration team.
