Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) SY 2020-2021
Applications for the Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) 2020-2021 Cohort are due Friday, March 20 at 3 pm (application link here: https://bit.ly/2PB5C4J). Please consider forming a cross disciplinary team at your school to participate in the year-long professional development. See more information on this flyer.
Quality Teaching for English Learners (QTEL) is a sociocultural and sociolinguistic principled approach to language and disciplinary content learning. The instructional approach provides students with high challenge learning opportunities with high supports. Units plans include 3 components: Preparing the Learner, Interacting with Texts / Concepts / Content, and Extending Understandings. Teachers will collaborate in a year-long professional development process to learn and share how to plan and prepare instruction grounded in “high supports and high expectations” to enable students to explore disciplinary ideas and concepts while accelerating their language development.
See teacher reflections from the 2019 QTEL Summer Institute below:
I used to think that:
– “Teaching ELLs was about slowing down and simplifying material.”
And now I know:
“My English learners can be part of the class regardless of ability. If I am willing to put the effort into planning and creating, they will succeed in my classroom.”
