Ellis Trust Scholarship

The Charles E. Ellis Trust for Girls (The Ellis Trust) helps eligible young women in Philadelphia excel in high school and be prepared for post-secondary success.

New applications for funding for summer programs may be submitted beginning February 1, 2016. Students whose applications were approved during the period July 1, 2014 through November 15, 2015 may request funding for summer programs without submitting a new application.

Students must apply for admission and financial aid through the summer program, before requesting funding from the Charles E. Ellis Trust. Priority will be given to students attending high impact educational programs

Al-Bustan Arabic Language& Arts Summer Program

Three-week educational programs for those interested in exploring the Arabic language and culture through the arts.  The program includes four hours of Arabic reading, speaking, writing, and listening with two hours of arts instruction in visual art, singing, and drumming, taught by experienced language teachers and teaching artists.

University of Pennsylvania Summer Mentorship Program

The Provost Summer Mentorship Program is an innovative four-week experience, aiming to inspire first-generation and minority students in Philadelphia to view higher education as an achievable and worthwhile goal. Students selected for the program are provided the opportunity to partner with, and learn from, the five professional schools here at the University. These include the Penn School of Dental Medicine, Penn Nursing, Penn Engineering, Perelman School of Medicine, and Penn Law. Over the course of the program, admitted high school students gain first-hand experience in chosen academic disciplines and the opportunity to explore a variety of career opportunities.

Carleton Liberal Arts Experience

Carleton College is honored to host an inspiring summer program designed for the best and brightest college-bound students representing high schools across the country. The Carleton Liberal Arts Experience (CLAE) will select 50 high school students who have just completed their sophomore year and bring them to Carleton, all expenses paid, for a one-week summer program. The CLAE program introduces the strengths of a liberal arts education through an array of courses in science, art, social sciences, and technology.

Mercy College Business Leadership Academy

Students will learn leadership lessons from faculty and leaders from top companies while participating in active learning and team-building opportunities.  In addition, students will visit Fortune 500 companies.  Past visits have included Goldman Sachs, PriceWaterhousCooper, Young and Rubicam, Bloomberg and MTV, among others.  There is no charge for tuition and students stay in the dorm for free (other costs do apply).  Students from 23 states applied for 150 positions last year.

Boston University Summer Investigative Journalism Workshop

The New England Center for Investigative Reporting, based at Boston University’s College of Communication, is offering a unique Investigative Journalism Workshop this summer. There are three two-week workshops. During each session, students participate in seminars and work alongside BU faculty and award-winning local and national journalists on investigative stories that could be published on the center’s website or in regional and national publications. Students will live on the BU campus and gain hands-on experience in investigative reporting while developing critical thinking and writing skills.

Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences

The Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences (PGSS) was established in order to provide a summer enrichment experience in the sciences and mathematics for talented Pennsylvania high school students and to encourage them to pursue careers in the fields of science, technology, engineering or mathematics. The program provides instruction in biological sciences, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and computer science, with emphasis on collaborative learning and team research.

25 high school journalists from across the country come to Princeton’s campus for 10 days every August for a crash course on journalism and college admissions. State Police Youth Week

Students will learn how to work as a team and be taught self-esteem.  There will be classes in Pennsylvania Vehicle and Crime Codes, forensic sciences, radar, riot control, tactical drug operation through the use of specially trained dogs, weapon firing, and other police related skills.

Keystone Girls State

Students study local, county and state government by setting up their own miniature city, county and state governments and administer then according to laws of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  Open to female students who have completed their junior year and resides in Pennsylvania.

Hispanic National Bar Foundation’s Future Latino Leaders Law Camp

Held each summer over 9 days in Washington, D.C., the program gives high school students from across the country an opportunity to live on a college campus while exploring the nation’s capital and meeting influential Latino attorneys and judges. Students receive behind the scenes tours of the U.S. Capitol, State Department, Department of Justice, and Supreme Court. The classroom and mock trial competition experience provides students an opportunity to develop valuable skills, such as team work and collaboration, oral presentation skills, critical thinking skills, productive argument and persuasion skills, and the ability to face challenging obstacles with enthusiasm, professionalism and confidence.

Lebanon Valley College Health and Biomedical Sciences Summer Camp

Through lectures and hands-on laboratory investigations in state-of-the-art laboratories, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of molecular biology, pharmacology, immunology, biochemistry and medical ethics.  Students will learn how laboratory science can be translated into improved human health, and they will engage in investigative experiences that will allow them to apply their laboratory skills to real life problems.  In addition, students will interact with practicing professionals in fields such as medicine, physical therapy, toxicology, genetic counseling, and biomedical laboratory research.  The Health and Biomedical Sciences camp will provide a fun, challenging and engaging college environment in which students will develop a deeper understanding of what it means to be a biomedical scientist and health professional.

Workready Philadelphia

The WorkReady Summer program is available to youth between the ages of 14 and 21. Youth must be at least 14, but not older than 21, on the first day of the WorkReady program. Duke Talent Identification Program

Duke TIP offers challenging educational adventures to motivated, dedicated, and talented high school students who possess a desire to learn in a unique setting.  Duke TIP Field Studies are two weeks long and take place in U.S. locales or in countries around the world such as China, Costa Rica, and the Netherlands. The American Youth Leadership Program

AYLP offers opportunities for American high students and educators to travel abroad on a three- to four-week-long exchange program to gain first-hand knowledge of foreign cultures and to collaborate on solving global issues. Several different organizations implement this program, and each has organized an academic and experiential educational exchange focused on dialogue and debate, leadership development, and community service. Andeo International Homestays

What makes ANDEO’s Gap programs stand out is that they are very flexible. They all start with four or more weeks of small-group language classes and a homestay with a local host family. Consider this your ‘landing pad’! From there, you can choose your own path. For example, you can continue with university-level courses on indigenous cultures in Peru, explore your artistic talents in Italy, learn how to surf in Spain, live and work on an organic farm in Japan, or get involved with a community service project in Mexico. The College of Physicians of Philadelphia’s 2012 Teva Pharmaceuticals Summer Internship

This is a three-week summer internship program that takes place from July 23rd – August 10th, 2012. Students will work five days a week (Monday through Friday) from 10am-4pm (30 hours/week). The stipend is $10.00/hr.  Any rising 11th or 12th grader currently enrolled at a school within the School District of Philadelphia is welcome to apply. All students must obtain a work permit and have a parent or guardian grant permission to participate prior to starting the internship.

Georgetown University’s Summer Programs

Students can earn college credit or explore a new interest all while experiencing the vibrancy of university life in Washington, D.C.  The programs take students out of the classroom, allowing them to experience the action of Congressional hearings, medical school labs, Pentagon briefings, foreign embassies, Capital Hill offices, prominent government institutions focused on security and intelligence and other exciting Washington, D.C. events.  Courses run from eight days to five weeks during the summer.

Pratt Institute Precollege Summer Program

Every summer, Pratt sponsors a college-level program for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors at its Brooklyn campus. It is an intensive immersion experience; approximately 400 high school students, ages 16–18, seize the opportunity to experience college-level study in Pratt Institute’s PreCollege program. Students are immersed in a program of art, design, architecture, or creative writing, modeled after Pratt’s undergraduate offerings. Upon completion of the program, students earn four elective college credits.

Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week

A one-of-a-kind summer program that offers in-coming high school juniors and seniors a unique and challenging opportunity to see what it is like to run their own business.  Participants will make up an “imaginary” management team where they will learn first-hand about the Free Enterprise System. Their task – turn their failing company into a financial success!  Telluride Association Sophomore Seminars (TASS)

This summer, thirty-six bright, motivated high school sophomores will participate in one of two challenging six-week college-level courses in African American studies and other fields at the University of Michigan and Indiana University.  Telluride works with university faculty to create exciting courses designed to inspire young people to explore the the histories, politics and cultural experiences of people of African descent and a variety of other topics.  Because we believe that students should have the opportunity to pursue their ideals, we cover all the program costs, including tuition, books, room and board, field trips, and facilities fees.
