At Carver High School of Engineering and Science, Ms. Yun Zeng is redefining what it means to be an educator, mentor, and leader. As a Chinese language teacher and National Honor Society (NHS) Coordinator, her impact reaches far beyond the classroom, transforming student experiences and creating opportunities that continue to shape the future of the entire school community.

Ms. Zeng has elevated Carver’s National Honor Society into a thriving, student-centered network of leadership and support. Under her guidance, NHS enrollment expanded to more than 75 student leaders who now serve as peer tutors, student ambassadors, and school tour guides. Through her intentional peer tutoring and mentoring model, students receiving academic support have improved course performance, strengthened confidence, and remained on track for graduation. Her innovative approach produced measurable results, contributing to Carver’s ninth-grade class achieving an impressive 97% on-track rate after the first quarter — the highest percentage in the building.

Her leadership extends beyond school walls and into the broader community. Last year, Ms. Zeng spearheaded a student-driven service initiative that earned first place in the Philly Service Awards competition and secured a $20,000 grant. Through her leadership, NHS students partnered with Robotics and Art Club members to design and build a STEM Lab for Duckery Elementary School. The initiative not only expanded educational opportunities for younger students, but also provided resources for student affinity groups and instructional materials that enhanced programming across Carver. Reflecting on her impact, NHS President Katherine Aiello shared, “Ms. Zeng has put us in the best position to be successful.”

Inside the classroom, Ms. Zeng continues to demonstrate extraordinary instructional excellence. Her Chinese language courses are among the highest-performing language programs at Carver, and over the past three years, more than 80% of her AP Chinese students have earned scores of 3 or higher on the AP exam. Through rigorous, culturally responsive, and student-centered instruction, she ensures students achieve meaningful growth while developing a deeper understanding of language and culture.

Students also look forward to her annual Lunar New Year celebrations, where Ms. Zeng brings learning to life by introducing traditions and cultural experiences that create lasting memories and foster global understanding.

Known for her exceptional professionalism and one of the strongest attendance records in the building, Ms. Zeng is consistently present, dependable, and deeply invested in the success of students and staff alike.

Through her unwavering dedication, visionary leadership, and passion for service, Ms. Yun Zeng exemplifies the very best of the School District of Philadelphia and is a truly deserving recipient of Teacher of the Month for May 2026. Congratulations, Ms. Zeng! We are beyond excited to celebrate your incredible impact and grateful for the countless ways you continue to inspire, empower, and uplift the Carver community each and every day!
