Shannon Brophy – Teacher of the Month May 2025

The School District of Philadelphia is proud to recognize Ms. Shannon Brophy of Bartram High School as our Teacher of the Month—a well-deserved honor for an educator who leads with heart, vision, and an unshakable commitment to her students.
Ms. Brophy serves as both an Emotional Support teacher and the Special Education Compliance Monitor (SPECM) at Bartram, where she plays a vital role in supporting some of the school’s most vulnerable learners. Through her weekly Professional Learning Community (PLC) meetings, she provides hands-on coaching and training for the special education team, ensuring each student’s academic and emotional needs are met with excellence. She diligently oversees the development of high-quality, defensible IEPs, while also mentoring her colleagues to ensure compliance with special education laws and best practices.
Her leadership doesn’t stop with the special education team. Ms. Brophy is also a trusted resource for general education teachers, collaborating with them to implement appropriate accommodations and modifications that help students thrive in inclusive classrooms. Her depth of knowledge in special education supports and services makes her an invaluable asset across the school.
Beyond the classroom, Ms. Brophy facilitates weekly interagency meetings alongside school counselors, the Intensive Behavioral Health Services (IBHS) coordinator, and DHS liaison. Together, they work to support students facing behavioral health challenges, housing instability, or those in foster care or the juvenile justice system—ensuring no child falls through the cracks.
Most recently, Ms. Brophy brought joy and connection to the Low Incidence population by organizing a Spring Fling at Bartram High School. With collaboration from schools across Learning Network 12—including Sayre, Overbrook, West Philadelphia, and South Philadelphia High Schools—she created an unforgettable community event that celebrated students of all abilities.
In addition to her work as an educator and advocate, Ms. Brophy also serves as the Bartram girls’ softball coach. Her care for her team extends far beyond the field: she has purchased uniforms and cleats for families in need and even supported players with access to laundry facilities—proving that for her, coaching is a ministry of love and service.
Ms. Shannon Brophy embodies the Bartram motto, “B the change.” Her selflessness, leadership, and tenacity make her the epitome of a Bartram Brave—and a true champion for Philadelphia’s youth.
Congratulations, Ms. Brophy. Your dedication changes lives and we are proud of you!
