Dear School District of Philadelphia Community,
Effective August 24, 2025, Phase 1 of SEPTA’s service cuts will go into effect. These cuts represent the elimination of 32 bus routes, significant reductions in rail service options, a 21.5% fare increase, longer wait times, and larger crowds.
SEPTA has created a helpful Service Cuts website that contains the background on the cuts, and provides resources like fare increase summaries; updated service maps; and revised bus, metro, and regional rail schedules. Also included on the website is this School Impacts document, which outlines the schools that will be affected by the cuts, and suggests alternative routes. We encourage staff and families to visit the Service Cuts website, and become familiar with the information it contains.
In addition, SEPTA has created this Rider Guide, which provides step-by-step information on how to use either the SEPTA website, or the SEPTA app to plan ahead.
We understand that these service cuts may present a hardship to School District of Philadelphia staff and families. Thousands of students and hundreds of employees ride SEPTA to school and work every day. As a District, we are hoping that SEPTA receives adequate funding to restore full service. And, we hope the above information will be helpful as you make alternative travel plans in preparation for the first day of school on August 25th.
Sincerely,
Oz Hill
Deputy Superintendent of Operations
The School District of Philadelphia
