The School District of Philadelphia is thrilled to honor Mrs. Cynthia Carr of Swenson Arts & Technology High School as our November 2025 Teacher of the Month. For more than 30 years, Mrs. Carr has dedicated her career to ensuring that students with autism receive the individualized support, compassion, and high expectations they deserve.

Last week, the Swenson community came together for an unforgettable surprise celebration with FOX29’s Bob Kelly. Even more special, Mrs. Carr’s father, a former SDP principal, joined other family members to witness this moment of well-deserved honor. The joy on their faces reflected what her colleagues and students already know: Cynthia Carr is extraordinary.

Mrs. Carr consistently goes above and beyond to support her school’s Autistic Support program, working closely with colleagues to develop, implement, and track IEP goals. She takes time to understand each student’s unique strengths and needs, offering practical strategies and sharing instructional resources that bring learning to life. Whether she is modifying classroom materials, introducing communication supports, or helping students master essential functional math skills, she does so with unwavering patience and creativity.

New teachers and paraprofessionals quickly learn that Mrs. Carr is the first person willing to mentor and guide them. She breaks down complex processes into approachable steps, models effective data-collection techniques, and checks in regularly to ensure each student’s support plan is implemented with fidelity. Her leadership fosters confidence in her teammates and reinforces the belief that every student can thrive with the right support.

Her commitment to mentoring extends beyond her department. Temple University teacher resident, Ben Nease, credits Mrs. Carr with strengthening his teaching foundation, showing him that the first step to instruction is connection. She taught him how to listen deeply, build trust, and understand students as individuals so their growth is both academic and emotional. Her influence has shaped his practice and demonstrated what compassionate, effective teaching truly looks like.

Even after more than 30 years in the classroom, Mrs. Carr continues to seek out new tools and approaches to help students reach their goals. Her curiosity, humility, and passion for lifelong learning inspire everyone around her. When challenges arise with behavior or engagement, she steps in without hesitation, co-teaching, encouraging, problem-solving, and bringing the department together around a shared mission: doing what is best for students.

Mrs. Carr is not only a trusted colleague. She is a cheerleader for her students, a pillar of support for her team, and a role model for the next generation of educators. Her impact is immeasurable and her legacy continues to shape Swenson one student, one colleague, and one day at a time.

Congratulations to Mrs. Cynthia Carr, a true champion for students and a shining example of the heart that makes Philadelphia educators among the very best. We are grateful for all she gives and all she is.
