Timothy “Chef Tim” Lopez brings excellence, discipline, and heart to everything he does, and the impact of his work is felt far beyond the walls of the kitchen. After spending 13 years cooking for the Philadelphia Eagles and earning a Super Bowl ring, Chef Tim chose to bring his world-class experience to the classroom. Today, he leads Jules E. Mastbaum High School’s Culinary Arts program, preparing nearly 100 students for meaningful careers in the culinary industry.
Chef Tim sets high expectations and meets students with the support and structure they need to rise to them. In close partnership with Chef Allen at Mastbaum and alongside school and District staff, he consistently creates opportunities for students to grow – both during their time at Mastbaum and well after graduation. His classroom is a place of focus, collaboration, and pride. During a recent demonstration of Career and Technical Education (CTE) options for ninth graders, more than a dozen students worked side by side preparing chicken alfredo, fully engaged, communicating clearly, and taking ownership of their learning in the newly remodeled culinary space.
Beyond daily instruction, Chef Tim helps lead the Panther Café, where culinary students regularly prepare meals, drinks, and desserts for staff and students. The café is more than a school-based business, it is a hands-on learning environment where students develop real-world skills in cooking, customer service, and program management. Funds raised through the café are reinvested directly into the program, ensuring a well-stocked kitchen and continued opportunities for students to learn and thrive.
One of the highlights of the Mastbaum school year is the annual Culture Fest, during which the Culinary Arts department prepares meals for more than 700 students and staff. Under the leadership of Chef Tim and Chef Allen, the event reflects not only technical skill, but also community, celebration, and care.
Chef Tim’s commitment to service extends beyond the school building. During the week of Thanksgiving, he and the Culinary Arts department prepared and served meals to nearly 600 people at two homeless shelters and on the streets, modeling for students what it means to use their talents in service of others.
Another fun highlight: Chef Tim is also a published author. Last August, he released his first cookbook, Kickoff Kitchen, and it’s a total win for football fans and food lovers. It’s built for game day, from house parties to tailgates, and features two recipes inspired by every professional team so you can create a full menu around your favorite squad. And yes, it absolutely includes Eagles-inspired flavor, which makes it even more special given Chef Tim’s 13 years cooking for the Philadelphia Eagles.
Timothy Lopez embodies what it means to be an educator: a master of his craft, a mentor to students, a collaborative partner, and a leader who believes in giving back. We are immensely proud to honor Chef Tim as December 2025 Teacher of the Month and grateful for the passion, excellence, and compassion he brings to Mastbaum and to the School District of Philadelphia every day.
