The Heart, Soul, and Backbone: Paraprofessionals Are Shaping Our Schools. Read more below.

Today, the School District of Philadelphia celebrates Paraprofessional Appreciation Day by recognizing the vital work of our paraprofessionals—particularly our Student Climate Staff and Special Education Assistants—who make our mission possible. These dedicated professionals do more than fill gaps; they build bridges. Each day, they deliver essential instructional support and foster trust with students, helping to create the positive culture every child needs to thrive. They are essential connectors in every classroom.

Beyond Support: Advocates
Paraprofessionals do more than assist—they advocate for students and schools, building trust between curriculum and community. Their collaboration ensures every child receives support and the opportunity to thrive.

Investing in Excellence
We don’t just value our paraprofessionals in words; we value them through action. Under Strategy 4.9 of Dr. Watlington’s Strategic Plan, we are committed to providing role-specific, transformative professional development for non-instructional staff, particularly paraprofessionals. Over the last three school years, we have worked tirelessly to ensure our 3,000 Special Education Assistants and 1,500 Student Climate Staff receive the specialized training they need to lead and succeed.

A Matter of Equity
Paraprofessionals often best reflect the students we serve—not only as staff, but also as neighbors, mentors, and community pillars.

  • Community-Rooted: Most of our paraprofessionals live in the very neighborhoods where they work.
  • Shared Experience: Many are proud graduates of our District schools, bringing a unique understanding of our students’ journeys.
  • Mirroring Our Students: As a group, our paraprofessionals closely mirror the racial demographics of our student body more than any other staff category.

Lifting up our paraprofessionals is an equity priority. Supporting them is an investment in Philadelphia’s neighborhoods and our city’s future.

To our paraprofessionals: Without you, our schools simply would not be the same. Thank you for your grit, your heart, and your unwavering dedication to our students.
