The School District of Philadelphia is proud to recognize Ms. Erika Buscaglia, Health and Physical Education Teacher at Patterson Elementary School, as a Teacher of the Month, an honor that reflects her extraordinary dedication to her students, her school community, and the District as a whole.

Ms. Buscaglia is a master educator who has redefined what it means to teach Health and Physical Education. While her primary content area is physical education, she has seamlessly integrated Reading, Math, Science, and Social Studies into her instruction, ensuring that every moment in her classroom is both active and academically rigorous. Whether students are identifying letters on the gym floor, naming state capitals while in motion, or engaging in math center rotations aligned to grade-level standards, Ms. Buscaglia creates a learning environment where movement and academics work hand in hand.
Her commitment to student success extends far beyond her own classroom. Ms. Buscaglia regularly meets with teachers during their prep periods and lunch to understand the skills students are working on, intentionally incorporating those concepts into her lessons. This level of collaboration ensures that students experience true cross-curricular learning and reinforces key academic skills in meaningful and engaging ways.

The impact of her work is evident across the entire Patterson school community. Attendance is at its highest level in four years, and the school has experienced consistent year-over-year growth, with gains of at least 3 percent and reaching over 8 percent this year. Additionally, students have shown significant academic progress, including an increase of over 9 percent in STAR Reading from fall to winter and a 3 percent increase in STAR Math during the same period. Ms. Buscaglia understands that when students are present and engaged, achievement follows, and she has been instrumental in creating systems that encourage both.
Through initiatives such as Jump Rope for Heart, Bucket Drumming, attendance incentives, Field Day, March Madness, and Read Across America, Ms. Buscaglia brings energy and joy into the school while maintaining a strong academic focus. Her approach to Field Day is particularly noteworthy. For four weeks leading up to the event, students prepare by learning games independently, each designed with embedded Math, ELA, Science, or Social Studies components. These experiences help students make meaningful connections between physical activity and classroom learning.
Ms. Buscaglia’s classroom is a model of consistency, safety, and excellence. She has not had a single behavior or transition concern, and her management style ensures that all students feel supported and successful. She is intentional about helping students understand their academic and health goals, and she plays a key role in leading schoolwide recognition efforts for attendance and achievement. Her message is clear and consistent: she cares deeply about her school and wants the very best for Patterson scholars.
Her influence extends well beyond instruction. Over the past two years, Patterson’s climate survey results have surpassed both the District and Learning Network averages, a testament to the culture she helps cultivate. She arrives at school 90 minutes early and often stays late, demonstrating an unmatched level of commitment. She also maintains perfect attendance, having not missed a day in seven years, modeling reliability and dedication for both students and staff.
Ms. Buscaglia’s connection to Patterson Elementary runs deep. She is a proud alumna of the school, returning to serve the same community that helped shape her. For nearly 30 years, she has dedicated her career to the School District of Philadelphia, pouring into generations of students and families. Her legacy of service is also rooted in her family, as her mother was a teacher at Patterson Elementary who retired from the school, making Ms. Buscaglia’s impact part of a powerful, multi-generational commitment to education in this community.
Her impact also reaches the broader District. She has taught at the collegiate level, preparing future educators, advocated for the recruitment of highly qualified teachers, and supported new teacher development through orientation and ongoing coaching. District leaders regularly bring new and struggling teachers into her classroom to observe her practice, as she is widely recognized as a model educator.
Ms. Buscaglia is a true “marigold” within Patterson and across the District. She leads professional learning through Tune Up Tuesdays, ensuring staff engagement and follow-through, and actively participates in Districtwide events such as the Penn Relays. Her advocacy extends into the community as well, where she has helped establish a food pantry to support families and ensure access to essential resources.
Ms. Erika Buscaglia embodies the very best of the School District of Philadelphia. Her passion, innovation, and unwavering commitment to students have made a lasting impact on her school and community. We proudly celebrate her as Teacher of the Month and thank her for her continued service and leadership.
