Dear School District of Philadelphia Families,
The Philadelphia region continues to experience higher than normal temperatures this week. And while the District has made significant progress toward ensuring our schools are adequately cooled in order to provide safe and comfortable learning environments, there are still a number of schools with inadequate cooling systems.
As a result, out of an abundance of caution, and in order to ensure the safety of our entire school community:
- The 57 schools listed below will shift to virtual learning for Wednesday, May 20.
- Any early childhood centers operating at these locations will also shift to virtual learning.
- All in-person after-school activities, including all athletic programs scheduled for tomorrow are canceled.
Students were sent home with their chromebooks on Monday, May 18 to support virtual learning. Here is some additional information to help support you and your family during this temporary shift:
- Chromebooks – If your child needs a District-issued Chromebook or their Chromebook needs repair, you can: visit one of the District’s two Parent and Family Tech Support Centers (listed below) Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; call our Tech Support Hotline at 215-400-4444; or email FamilyTechSupport@philasd.org.
- Fitzpatrick Annex Building (rear of Fitzpatrick Elementary School)
4101 Chalfont Drive, Philadelphia PA 19154 - Martin Luther King High School (parking lot entrance on Haines Street)
6100 Stenton Avenue; Philadelphia, PA 19138
- Fitzpatrick Annex Building (rear of Fitzpatrick Elementary School)
- Support services – We know that shifting to virtual learning can be a challenge. Please visit phila.gov to find food or meal distribution sites in Philadelphia or call the Philly Hopeline at 1-833-PHL-HOPE if you or your child would like free counseling services.
Please use Class Dojo, Google Classroom or your Parent Portal account to connect with your child’s teachers if you have additional questions.
While the School District of Philadelphia acknowledges that in-person learning is the best option for students, the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and families remains our top priority. In accordance with the District’s Inclement Weather Protocol, we are closely monitoring weather conditions across our region. We will communicate through our standard channels once we’ve determined that date for our return to in-person learning.
I encourage everyone to stay cool and safe for the remainder of this week.
Sincerely,
Oz Hill
Deputy Superintendent of Operations
The School District of Philadelphia
