School Districts Wins U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Award

The U.S. Department of Education has announced that The School District of Philadelphia is among the 2017 U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon Schools District Sustainability Awardees. The District is just one of nine school districts nationwide to receive such recognition.

The District was nominated for the award by Pennsylvania Department of Education Secretary Pedro Rivera, and celebrated the announcement on Thursday at Henry C. Lea School. The award recognizes schools, districts, and postsecondary institutions for their innovative efforts to reduce environmental impact and utility costs, improve health and wellness, and ensure effective sustainability education.

Dr. William R. Hite, Superintendent of The School District of Philadelphia, celebrated the news with students and District staff at Henry C. Lea School.
