PHILADELPHIA — School District of Philadelphia officials today reminded families, students and community members that the K-12 School Selection Process for the 2018-2019 school year ends at 5 p.m. Monday, November 13. This is an important deadline for all students in any grade looking to change schools for the upcoming academic year, including 8th graders looking to choose their high school for next fall.

The School District has over 100 exciting programs and school options across the city. This process is a great opportunity for students to seek out schools that have programs and curriculum that are ideal for their interests, career goals and academic pursuits.  The high school selection process allows students and families to choose a school other than their neighborhood high school.

“We want our students and families to feel empowered by this choice to select the school community that is right for them, no matter what grade they will enter next school year,” said Dr. William R. Hite, Superintendent of The School District of Philadelphia. “Students can match their learning style with a learning environment that will help them have a successful educational experience that prepares them for college or career.”

The District accepts applications for students entering grades K-12 online through one of two portals, depending on whether a student is already a District student, or coming to our District schools from another system, including charter, private and Catholic schools. Students can seek assistance from their school counselor or teachers to complete the online application. There is a fully revamped section of the District’s website to help inform and guide students and their families, complete with videos in both English and Spanish. Students and parents will be informed of the results of their applications in mid-January of 2018.

“We are committed to the success of all of our students,” Dr. Hite added.  “Those who participate in this process, no matter what their final decision is, are taking control of their education and their future.”

It is important to note that School Selection Process is not only for students choosing a high school. This is the time for ANY student entering grades K-12 for the 2018-2019 academic year to request a new school for the upcoming year.
