PHILADELPHIA – The School District of Philadelphia today opened kindergarten registration for the 2018-19 school year for children who will be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2018.

“Enrollment in kindergarten is one of the first steps parents can take in setting their children up for long-term success,” said Dr. William R. Hite, Superintendent, The School District of Philadelphia. “Kindergarten not only boosts students’ academic achievement, but research shows it strengthens their social and emotional skills as well. I encourage all families to ensure their young children have the tools they need to succeed by registering them for kindergarten.”

Dr. Hite joined Principal Stacey Burnley and City Councilman Kenyatta Johnson at Edwin M. Stanton School, where parents were on hand to register their students for kindergarten and meet with school staff.

“Registering students for kindergarten early allows our schools to be ready for students,” said Principal Burnley. “When students are registered for kindergarten by the end of May, teachers can better prepare over the summer. We also welcome families to meet with school staff, like they are today, so that the kindergarten transition process is a smooth one for both families and students. We are excited to have these young learners join us and want to make sure we do everything we can to be ready for them.”

The District also honored current kindergarten #AttendanceHero students at Stanton School who have not missed a day since the beginning of the school year.

To register a child for kindergarten, a parent or guardian must bring the following documentation to the school:

  1. Parent/legal guardianship identification
  2. Child’s immunization record
  3. Proof of child’s age (including birth certificate, valid passport, etc.)
  4. Two current proofs of address in parent’s or guardian’s name

Parents will register their child for kindergarten at their neighborhood school. Anyone who needs more information about which neighborhood school is closest should use the District’s School Finder tool at philasd.org/school_finder/. If space is no longer available in a child’s neighborhood school, children will be offered enrollment in the closest elementary school that has space available.

In addition, District-wide Kindergarten Open House Day will take place at various schools Tuesday, March 6, 2018, while Open House Week will take place from May 7 to May 11, 2018. More information about these events, in addition to translated information about kindergarten registration in various languages, can be found online at philasd.org/kregistration.

Kindergarten registration runs through May 31, 2018.
