Jayzen Smith is the very definition of perseverance, humility, and purpose in action. A senior in the Computer Systems Networking CTE program at West Philadelphia High School, Jayzen has not only risen above significant personal challenges—he has turned every opportunity placed before him into a stepping stone toward excellence.

It is with great pride that the School District of Philadelphia recognizes Jayzen as Senior of the Month.

Throughout his time in the Computer Networking program, Jayzen has consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism, technical skill, and character well beyond his years. Whether assisting classmates with coursework, troubleshooting technology issues, or stepping in as a reliable peer mentor, he leads with quiet confidence and a genuine desire to help others succeed. His perfect attendance since 2023 speaks volumes about his discipline, commitment, and determination to show up—no matter the circumstances.

Jayzen is also known across West Philadelphia High School as a trusted problem-solver. He regularly provides computer repair and technical support for teachers and staff, approaching each request with patience, respect, and a strong customer-service mindset. His technical skillset continues to grow, spanning hardware and software troubleshooting across Windows, Chrome OS, and Mac OS platforms, as well as wiring, cabling, and device inventory management to support the District’s 1:1 technology access.

Currently, Jayzen is an active participant in the Penn Medicine Pathways Program, where he is intentionally preparing for a career in information technology. Through this program, he holds a paid internship with the Penn Medical School in Space Planning and Operations. In this professional setting, Jayzen receives and delivers equipment across departments, maintains safe and organized workspaces, and consistently demonstrates the reliability and attention to detail that supervisors depend on. He has also gained hands-on experience as a Security Installer Assistant and as a Chromebook Repair Technician for the School District of Philadelphia.

Importantly, Jayzen has completed Pathway 3 (Career & Technical Education Concentrator) and is already working in the industry, supporting internal computer repair at West Philadelphia High School and assisting a local middle school in maintaining their Chromebook inventory and teacher technology. He is currently working toward his CompTIA Tech+ certification, further positioning himself for long-term success in the IT field. His performance has already made a strong impression at Penn, where he is on track for potential full-time employment after graduation.

Yet what truly sets Jayzen apart cannot be measured by certifications or technical skill alone; it is his character. Despite navigating serious obstacles, including food insecurity and housing instability, Jayzen has remained focused, grateful, and forward-moving. In every interaction, he presents himself with maturity and professionalism, offering a firm handshake, expressing sincere appreciation, and demonstrating a level of humility that leaves a lasting impression.

Teachers and staff consistently describe Jayzen as a young man who brightens every room he enters. He works hard, stays positive, and lifts those around him. To many at West Philadelphia High School, he is more than a student–he is family.

Jayzen Smith embodies the resilience, work ethic, and promise that define the very best of the School District of Philadelphia. His journey is a powerful reminder that when preparation meets opportunity, extraordinary things happen.

Congratulations, Jayzen, on being named Senior of the Month. Your future is bright, and we are cheering you on every step of the way.

We asked Jayzen our favorite list of questions:

Why do you think you were nominated as Senior of the Month?

I was nominated for Senior of the Month for February because of my positive behavior and attitude towards learning. I stand out from other seniors by staying open-minded to new opportunities that are introduced at WPHS. I am always reliable, dependable, and show up when needed. I am a student ambassador, maintain a positive attitude, and work hard to achieve excellence.  I am also an honors student, in a CTE program, earning industry certifications, applying my CTE skills to help classmates and teachers, all while participating in Penn Medicine Pathways Program, which will allow me to work with Penn Medicine after I graduate, earning a high wage, benefits, and college tuition reimbursement. I also work for the University of Pennsylvania Medical School as a paid intern with the Distribution Department, all while also being an in-school paid intern in Chromebook repair.

You were nominated by (Mr. Jacobs). Explain your relationship to him? Explain their role in your experience at your school.

I was nominated by Mr. Jonathan Jacobs. Mr. Jonathan is my mentor and friend. Mr. Jonathan often reminds me of how important it is to take advantage of opportunities that will enhance my skills, provide me with pathways to my future, and be professional. He has helped me achieve lots of income, a strong skillset on my resume, and is always encouraging me and helping me take advantage of opportunities.

What is one thing you’d like to share about yourself that most people don’t know about you?

One thing I would like to share is that most people don’t know that I’m a big music guy and video game fan. When I started at West CTE, I had no interest in technology, and my career aspiration was to be a rapper. I still enjoy singing. Just to myself now while fixing and solving technology problems.

How did you choose your high school?

I chose West Philadelphia High School because it is my local school. It was a beautiful, engaging atmosphere when I visited, and I was welcomed from the beginning. The school lunch they offered that day was on point as well, thanks to Ms. Pena.

What is the best thing about attending school at West Philadelphia High School?

The best thing about attending West Philadelphia High School is the atmosphere. West is a big family, with supportive and caring adults, and it allows students to truly be themselves.  Our school leaders, especially Principal Travis, have created an atmosphere where student voices and ideas are heard and amplified. My classroom instructor, Ms. Marie Wilkins-Walker, has been one of the most impactful people in my life, not only teaching me skills and having patience with me during my 10th-grade year, but also always believing in me and recommending me to tech support jobs within the school.

What is one thing that the School District could do to improve its service to students?

The district should consider offering us more internships and career opportunities.  I recognize classwork is important; however, because of internships and work experience, I have made money and earned a career after graduation.

Jayzen, we are so excited for you – best of luck in the college and career of your dreams!
