Dear School District of Philadelphia Parents, Families and the Class of 2026,

I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Class of 2026! Graduating with a high school diploma is an extraordinary achievement, and every graduating student has been on a unique, individual journey to arrive at this moment. Class of 2026, you have made sacrifices, overcome challenges, and learned many lessons along the way. There have been ups and downs, victories and defeats. Yet in spite of – or perhaps because of – these experiences, you are walking across stages this week, experiencing an incredible milestone.

Indeed, the Class of 2026 is impressive. As of June 8, 89% of seniors are on track to graduate. Our graduating seniors have been offered nearly $450 million in scholarships. More than 6,000 have been accepted to an institute of higher education. Nearly 800 graduates earned industry certifications through Career & Technical Education programming. And more than 200 graduates are enlisting in the military. Well done Class of 2026 – you should be extremely proud!

We are living in interesting times. As a city, nation, and world, we are facing challenges – new and familiar – that may feel insurmountable. However after four years here in Philadelphia, I remain optimistic about the future because of students like the class of 2026. When I look at this group, I see resilience, I see intelligence, I see character, I see grit. I see that nothing is insurmountable. I see thousands of young people poised to overcome obstacles, tackle challenges, and shape the future for the better.

The great athlete Arthur Ashe said – “Start where you are, use what you have, do what you can!” Class of 2026, as you prepare to take your next steps – college, career, military service, or another path – I encourage you to consider that your impact starts here and now. Confidently use the skills you’ve learned and knowledge you’ve gained to take on new challenges, explore new ideas, improve the lives of the people around you, and do everything you can to realize any future you desire!

On behalf of the School District of Philadelphia, and all educators, staff, and school communities, Congratulations Class of 2026! We are proud of you, we believe in you. And we wish you great success. Thank you for helping us become the fastest improving, large urban public school district in the nation.

In partnership,

Tony B. Watlington Sr., Ed.D.
