Chromebooks will automatically try to download updates to the ChromeOS, and then install those updates when the Chromebook is restarted.  But sometimes devices will not update correctly and must be manually updated to bring them up to the current version.

If a Chromebook is not running the latest ChromeOS, these are some problems you might see:

When trying to use the TestNav Kiosk App, the screen starts to load and never completes
When trying to use Lexia Core5 or Lexia PowerUp, you receive a message that the device is running the incorrect version
When attempting to Login to the Chromebook, you are returned to the Login screen with no error
The Chromebook will not connect to the District’s Wifi network

To find out the current tested version of ChromeOS for your Chromebooks, or versions of the Chrome browser for Mac and Windows systems, please visit https://gafe.philasd.org.

To quickly check the version of ChromeOS on a Chromebook:

Turn the Chromebook on
Sign on with your district username and password

Open the Chrome browser

Go to the address bar and type “chrome://version”
In the 1st line after “Google Chrome,” you will see the version listed

 

If not on the latest version – to update follow these steps:

Turn Chromebook on
Sign on with your district username and password
Click on the icon bottom right-hand corner
Click on the Gear icon
Click on the three bars in the top left-hand corner
Click on About Chrome OS
In the middle of the screen, you will the current version.
At this point, you can click on check for updates.
If there is an update it will day and asked you to reboot.
If there are no updates it will let you know that the Chromebook is up to date.

If the Chromebook is saying it is up-to-date but the version is not the current version or lower, we need to get the Chromebook updated to the latest version, please email gafe@philasd.org with the serial number of the Chromebook and stating the Chromebook will not update to the latest version and it not at the latest version and we will get to you.

To update the policies on your Chromebook, perform the following steps:

Open the Chrome browser
In the address bar type chrome://policy
Click on the button to refresh the policy.
Close the browser
Click on the icon in the bottom right-hand corner
