About the School Selection Process
Welcome to the School Selection process.
All students in the Philadelphia School District system are assigned a school, from Kindergarten through 12th grade, based on their home address. We refer to that as the student’s catchment (or more conversationally, neighborhood) school. Students may attend that catchment school, or, the school selection process gives them the opportunity to apply to attend another District school with available space, even if it is not their designated catchment school*.
This majority of students who participate in School Selection are 8th graders looking for high school options. However, any student in PreK through 11th grade can participate in the School Selection process.
Simple Overview of the Selection Process:
-
- Research your options
-
-
- The High & Middle School Directory is a comprehensive resource.
- Avela Explore & School Profiles also provide information to help guide and inform your decisions.
-
- Prepare for the application period
-
-
- Attend or view a Town Hall to learn what to expect when applying.
- District students and families: Ensure that you know how to access your student and parent portal accounts and that your family’s contact information is complete and correct. Your application will be pre-populated with your attendance, grades, and PSSA scores.
- Non-District students and families: Gather your transcripts and assessments. You will need to upload these records when you submit your application.
-
- Complete and submit your application
-
-
- You may apply to up to five schools, ranked in your order of preference.
- Make sure that you understand the eligibility requirements for any criteria-based school that you are applying to.
- The best source of help will be your school counselor; schedule time with them if you need support.
- Begin as early as possible so that you have enough time to complete your application correctly with no missing information or documents.
-
- Move through the post-application phases
-
-
- Eligibility Phase: Your application will be updated to reflect your eligibility status for each school you applied to. You must be marked “eligible” in order to be entered into a school’s lottery.
-
- Lottery Phase:
-
-
- Outcome 1: You will receive an admission offer from one of the schools you are eligible for, based on your order of preference. You will be placed on the waitlist for any school ranked higher than the school where you received an offer.
- Outcome 2: If you receive no offers, you will be placed on the waitlist for all schools that you are eligible for.
- Waitlist Phase: As applicants accept or decline their offers, you might receive offers from one or more schools where you were waitlisted.
-
*Note: Because your catchment school is automatically assigned based on your home address, no application is needed to attend. Simply register your child to your catchment school for the 2027–2028 school year, by completing the enrollment process online or in person at your neighborhood catchment school. Please contact your school directly for their in-person hours, or start your online registration application at any time.
