PHILADELPHIA — The School District of Philadelphia has opened its teacher application process for the 2019-2020 school year, almost two months earlier than in previous years.

“This continues to be an exciting time to be a teacher in Philadelphia’s public schools,” said Dr. William R. Hite, Superintendent. “We are seeing progress in climate and achievement our schools, and are eager to add more passionate educators to lead our classrooms. We are also hiring teachers earlier each year to ensure every classroom has a great teacher on the first day of school so that our students have the best opportunity to succeed.”

The School District of Philadelphia is an equal opportunity employer that provides excellent salary and employee benefits and professional development for all teachers. The application has been open since Monday, December 10, on the District’s Careers page at https://jobs.philasd.org/.

The District is looking to hire teachers in all content areas, and is particularly focused on finding teachers for Special Education, Mathematics, Science, Spanish Language, English, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classrooms. The application for candidates interested in teaching positions for the 2019-2020 school year can be found here.

Candidates submit applications to the teacher talent pool by answering questions and uploading a resume. Candidates are evaluated based on the strength of their application and how well they demonstrate competencies of personal leadership, instructional practice, cultural competence, and professional responsibility.

The District looks for candidates that expect to possess a Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Intern or Instructional Certificate before the beginning of the 2019-2020 school year, who are out-of-state certified, or who are exploring a career change and want to begin teaching.

The District’s Office of Talent reviews applications and makes candidates available to principals for school-based interviews. This year, the District will issue early contracts guaranteeing employment to strong candidates who apply before March. Early contract teachers will have the opportunity to network with principals across the District who will be hiring for next year in order to be prepared for the school-based interview process. This year, principals and site selection committees will begin interviewing for all open teaching positions on April 3, 2019.

In addition, the District also continues to recruit all content area teachers for vacancies and long term leaves in the current school year, particularly in the areas of Special Education, Math, Biology, Spanish Language, and ESOL. In an effort to attract more candidates for these and other positions, the Recruitment Office hosted a recruitment fair for current student teachers this past Monday, December 10 and gave offers to six qualified candidates on the spot.
