Dear School District of Philadelphia Families,

As we approach the season of Thanksgiving, I wanted to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude to each and every one of you. Our commitment to becoming the fastest-improving urban school district in the country, with Accelerate Philly as our roadmap is becoming a reality.

Over the past year, we reduced the student dropout rate, increased the number of students passing state tests while decreasing the number of students scoring at the lowest levels, and increased student and teacher attendance. Also, based on preliminary data, we expect our four-year graduation rate to increase when our data are verified by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania later this fall. Our District is making noticeable improvements and we are certainly headed in the right direction. Though we have much work to do, we have many reasons to be thankful.

This Thanksgiving, let’s celebrate the strength that comes from our collective efforts and the progress we’ve made together thus far. It is with a heart full of gratitude that I say thank you. Thank you for your patience, understanding, and continued trust as we work together to Accelerate Philly.

My hope is that you will take full advantage of the holiday break to rest and refresh. Spend quality time with friends and family, and indulge in the things that you love. I personally cannot wait to sit down at the table for that delicious Thanksgiving meal! Make every effort to keep yourselves and your families safe and healthy. Please enjoy this holiday season and continue to partner with us as we continue to prepare our children to imagine and realize any future they desire.

Best wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving!

In partnership,

Tony B. Watlington Sr., Ed.D.
