Yellow school buses are going green in Philly, and we are PROUD to start the trend in our city with electric buses that are the first of their kind in Pennsylvania. The Transportation Division unveiled five new electric vehicles at a press conference at the North Broad Street garage on February 18 and gave attendees a chance to walk through the electric buses and see how they work.

The new vehicles will cost 60% less to maintain and 80% less to fuel than a traditional diesel bus. Replacing a diesel bus with an electric one eliminates 23 tons of greenhouse gasses that would otherwise be emitted every year. Moving forward, the plan is to buy six more electric buses with an Alternative Fuels Incentive Grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection.
