Training Opportunities

The Driver Training and Certification Department provides the following training programs for school bus drivers.

  • Initial training for new drivers who have had little or no prior experience. School bus driver candidates must complete the state-mandated 20 hours of training (14 classroom hours and six in-bus instruction hours). Upon completion, driver applicants must pass the Pennsylvania Commercial Driver’s License test.
  • Recertification training for school bus drivers required to complete a ten-hour course of instruction (seven classroom review hours and three in-bus instruction hours) in order to maintain their credentials as mandated by Pennsylvania law every four years.
  • Remedial training for drivers involved in preventable accidents.

All drivers must have a valid driver’s license and obtain a physician’s certificate, a certificate of completion (20 hours of training), and a commercial driver’s license (CDL) with an S-endorsement, prior to being hired by the School District to be a school bus driver.

Our bus attendants are required to complete 20 hours of training per year.  This training focuses on professional development and building key skills required to support Special Needs students.
