The Board of Education held a public hearing on the phased closure of Austin Meehan Middle School on February 16, 2021. The District provided information at the public hearing on the rationale of Meehan’s closure which is primarily driven by the construction of a new K-8 school nearby which has been referred to as the New School on Ryan Avenue. When the Board approved the construction of the New School on Ryan Avenue at its Action Meeting on 6/27/19, Meehan’s eventual closure was an expected consequence. As the Board heard at its Finance Committee meeting on 12/3/20, the New School is on track to open in Fall 2021 and we are now proceeding with the formal closing procedures for Meehan.

The record for the public hearing on the closure of Meehan in conjunction with the New School opening on Ryan Avenue will close on May 26, 2021, at 4:30 pm. Comments may be submitted to schoolboard@philasd.org. The Board of Education will vote on the proposal at the May 27, 2021 public action meeting.
