About School Safety

School Safety is a central function of the School District of Philadelphia. Our work in supporting learning environments is among the most critical and sensitive in creating the conditions for learning and student success.

Mission Statement

The Office of School Safety is committed to fostering safe, secure, and supportive learning environments for Philadelphia public schools. We use research and data to make informed decisions that are centered on impartiality, restorative practices, and student equity. Our School Safety Officers participate in comprehensive training programs that include diversity and inclusion, trauma-informed care , adolescent development and restorative strategies. We believe students can reach their full potential in a positive and nurturing atmosphere. Our commitment to safety supports the School District and Board of Education’s mission to deliver an excellent public education for all students.

Strategic Pillars and Initiatives

Pillar 1: Restorative Practices

The Office of School Safety will put the development and success of students at the center of all of its work. This is best achieved through restorative approach that is grounded in trauma-informed care and a deep understanding of adolescent development.

Pillar 2: Training, Education, and Recruitment

The Office of School Safety will become regional training center that will not only support the development of outstanding School Safety staff for Philadelphia public schools, but will also offer training to all charter schools throughout Philadelphia, and to school districts throughout Southeast Pennsylvania.

Pillar 3: Community Outreach and Engagement

The Office of School Safety will partner with community leaders, local organizations, and District stakeholders to engage the community to support school and community safety through student-led panels, community meetings, and town halls.
