Happy Pride Month from the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

We have to be visible. We should not be ashamed of who we are. – Sylvia Rivera

It is important to acknowledge the many people who are a part of out LGBTQIA+ community for Pride Month, and year round. This is an exciting time to celebrate and acknowledge the many accomplishments that our LGBTQIA+ community brings to SDP and beyond. It is also important to remember that as we celebrate, there is an abundance of Anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation being proposed and passed in our country. So how can we, as allies, make sure that we are doing everything we can to support, uplift, and stay active to promote equity for everyone.

The Human Rights Campaign has released a handy guide on allyship that you can read if you are wondering what part you can play in helping to create a more equitable world this pride month.

Check out this short video from GLSEN on what LGBTQIA+ Youth with you knew.

These LGBTQ youth share what they wish people knew about their school experiences. LGBTQ students, what do you wish people knew? Share your school experiences: glsen.org/survey

June Spotlights

Student Spotlight: Patricia Tholley

I am a rising senior at Constitution High School. Being amongst the top students in my class has given me a different perspective; I know what it means to give it your all. As I start my college applications, I am going into college with the hopes of getting an M.D degree. I want to become a surgeon to be able to help the community that I am from and to help people from all over the world.  I am the vice president of my school’s National Honors Society, and participate in my school’s robotics club. I play a variety of sports such as tennis, soccer, and softball. Since the beginning of my junior year, I have taking dual enrollment courses at CCP to expand my learning. Keeping busy is a way that I get to explore different parts of myself, which I believe will help me discover myself. I am truly grateful to have been nominated for this month’s newsletter. I hope every student that reads this finds the path they have to take and succeed.

Organization Spotlight: The Attic Youth Center

The Attic Youth Center’s mission is to create opportunities for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, and Questioning (LGBTQ) youth to develop into healthy, independent, civic-minded adults within a safe and supportive community and to promote the acceptance of LGBTQ youth in society.

The Attic offers a wide range of programs and services designed to provide youth with the support and skills needed to transition into independent, thriving adults. The Attic strives to have a positive impact on all aspects of youth’s lives; to facilitate growth, empowerment, and resiliency; and to help youth find their voice, which is often silenced.
