Family Academy: Courses and Training (FACT) has launched for the 2018-19 School Year! The FACE Multilingual Family Support Unit wants to make sure our families know about courses and workshops that are designed especially for our multilingual, immigrant, and refugee families on a variety of topics in the strand entitled “New Americans”. Check out just some of the course listings and descriptions below!

Navigating Career Pathways with New Americans

This workshop will guide participants through a series of interactive exercises to identify the skills, support, knowledge, and resources to forge ahead on a career path. Participants will discuss possible barriers they may have encountered (including limited English proficiency (LEP), lack of social and professional networks, a lack of understanding and experience within the U.S. workforce) and then develop an action plan to address these barriers. Participants will define their goals; consider what steps they need to take to accomplish these goals, and what resources or additional training might be required to complete the plan.

  • Date: Tuesday, December 4, 2018 – 10:00 – 12:00 P.M. and 5:00 – 7:00 P.M.
  • Location: The Education Center, 440 North Broad Street
  • Facilitator: Welcoming Center for New Pennsylvanians
If There is One Thing, I wish You Did Not Forget, It Would Be…

Immigrants come to this country from many places and for many reasons. Some bring suitcases and pictures; others carry very little or lose it all along the way; yet, the most valuable things are carried in the heart and memory. This session will provide the opportunity for immigrant parents to create a collective video in which they can endow their children with the gift of a special memory, story, song, poem, or anything else of the choosing of the participant.

  • Date: Tuesday, February 19, 2019 – 5:00 – 7:00 P.M.
  • Location: The Education Center, 440 North Broad Street
  • Facilitators: Manuel Yepez, Steffany El-Barouki, Alfredo Montes
Ecomusiclaje: Ecosystem, Music & Recycling

This workshop will discuss how parents can help their children become stewards of the planet, by increasing their knowledge of how items that would traditionally be destined to the trash, could be re-use, recycled, and become a musical instrument. Families will participate in the transformation of household objects, which infused by each participants’ cultural experiences, will help all develop a new artistic expression. Come ready to build and jam! (Check out a video of Raúl Berríos leading a version of this workshop at the 2018 FACE End of Year Celebration below! • Date: Wednesday, April 17, 2019 – 10:00 – 12:00 P.M.
  • Place: Tilden Middle School, 6601 Elmwood Avenue
  • Facilitator: Raúl Berríos

Trauma and Art: The Healing Power of Creation

The goal of this session is to help individuals “find their voices through art so that they can begin to express their hurt and find a way to heal their wounds.” Participants will use different mediums to express their emotions: papier mâché, paper cut, clay, or textiles. No art experience necessary.

  • Date: Wednesday, May 8, 2019 – 10:00 – 12:00 P.M. and 5:00 – 7:00 P.M.
