PSTV has created a multimedia meetup space where students can learn about a multitude of media opportunities that are available beyond just PSTV. Here you will learn about film festivals, educational programs available from industry partners, workshops, Internships and much more.

WHYY Education Highlights

  • PBS Learning Media PBS  Learning Media is the next generation digital media service for pre-K – 16 educators. Bringing together the BEST of public media to enable teachers to be more effective, PBS LearningMedia provides educators with dynamic and engaging digital resources and professional development support. And it’s FREE!
  • Digital Media Courses for Educators at WHYY  Educators participating in professional development courses learn methods for implementing 21st Century Learning Skills in their classrooms. They learn to help their students create digital media and receive tips for integrating those skills into existing curricula and project-based learning approaches.
  • WHYY I Like This Book This initiative from WHYY, sponsored by Harriet and Larry Weiss, encourages children in kindergarten through twelfth grade to share their thoughts about a favorite book. If selected, your student or child could star in a 60-second spot on WHYY-TV, talking about “WHYY I Like This Book.”
  • American Graduate  Let’s Make it Happen is a public media initiative supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) to improve high school graduation rates. Public TV and radio stations in 36 states are working with community partners to generate understanding and action regarding the dropout crisis

 

PROGRAMS AT PHILLYCAM

PhillyCAM Youth Media Reel Skills

Make media that matters. Learn how to communicate your thoughts and ideas by using video and audio to create high-quality content for multiple platforms. Join our supportive and collaborative environment of youth media makers! If you are an awesome youth, between 14-21 years old, you are eligible to be part of Reel Skills, PhillyCAM’s  after school youth program. We provide access to equipment and other professional tools that help Philly youth to explore various forms of media to examine and tell their own stories through their own lens.

Participants of Reel Skills will:

Work with and build community with other talented youth across the city of Philadelphia.
Receive professional technical training in a creative community of peers.
Broadcast your media on our TV channels with Comcast and Verizon along with our radio station WPPM 106.5
Earn volunteer and networking experience through attending local media events.
Earn the opportunity to be selected for a  summer fellowship with PhillyCAM
Access to open media lab hours to work on independent projects for channel.

Experimental Media Fall/October 9 – December 11

DSLR  Filmmaking Fall/October 9 – December 11

Mondays/Experimental Media 4pm-6pm (Fall 2017)

Learn how to be intentional about the media you create and explore different forms that will impact how you see and create video. In this class, we will uncover the processes used to develop and encourage creative problem-solving. Look forward to learning how to evaluate media through creating, critiques, guest talks, research, and discussions. We will learn how experimental media is different than traditional media and enhance our sense of  creative curiosity and a willingness to experiment by creating several pieces of our own.

Recommended experience: Previous work in video, animation or art making recommended, video editing experience.

 

Tuesdays & Thursdays /DSLR  Filmmaking 4pm-6pm (Fall 2017)

Learn to create media that reflects your thoughts and opinions of the world around you.Through advanced storytelling techniques using DSLR cameras, creative cinematography techniques, dubbing audio, and more advanced post-production, participant filmmakers will create mini documentaries, music videos, and public service announcements. Our youth are encouraged to use media as a tool for change and understanding.

Recommended experience: Previous work in video or animation recommended, video editing experience, scriptwriting, and/or interest in social justice/community issues.
